Classification of Cutting Picks

In terms of usage, cutting picks can be roughly divided into two categories: mining picks and engineering picks. The so-called mining picks are the picks used in coal mines, which are coal-cutting tools. Engineering picks are mainly picks used in highway engineering.

 

Classification of Cutting Picks

 

1. Mining picks

 

Mining picks are cutting tools for directly breaking rocks and dropping coal on mining machinery such as road headers and shearers. Divided according to shape, mining picks are divided into two types: conical picks and knife-shaped picks

What are knife-shaped picks and conical picks?

 

A conical pick is a pick with a conical tooth head, and its geometric shape is a pen tip shape or a cone shape. The knife-shaped pick is a pick with a flat tooth head, and its geometric shape resembles a knife body. Both picks are mining machinery picks, that is, mining picks.

Since the pick is only used as an accessory of the mining machinery, the pick must be matched with the mining machinery. According to different types of mining machinery, we can also distinguish shearer picks, road header picks, continuous miner picks, bolter picks and so on.

Of course, the most used are the two major categories of shearer picks and road header picks

1) Shearer pick

 

The shearer pick is the main cutting tool on the drum of the underground coal mining machine. It is installed on the drum together with the toothed sleeve and the tooth seat and is one of the vulnerable parts for coal falling. Its performance directly affects the production capacity of coal mining machinery, power consumption, working stability and service life of other related parts.

2) Roadheader pick

 

The road header pick is the main cutting tool on the cutting head (gun head) of the road header. It is installed on the cutting head in conjunction with the tooth seat and is one of the vulnerable parts for roadway excavation. Its performance directly affects the performance of the road header’s production capacity, power consumption, working stability and service life of other related parts.

2. Engineering picks

 

The application environment of engineering picks is completely different from mining picks, one is on the road and the other is underground. One is the accessories of construction machinery, and the other is the accessories of mining machinery. According to different types of machinery, engineering picks can be roughly divided into rotary excavator picks, milling machine picks, etc.

The rotary drilling machine refers to the rotary drilling rig, and its pick is installed on the drill bit of the rotary drilling machine. A milling machine refers to a road milling machine, which is one of the main types of asphalt pavement maintenance construction machinery.

 

3. Other types

 

The above two classification methods are not certain. Some people will divide the picks into non-sparking picks, spin picks, and wear-resistant picks according to the technical characteristics of the picks. Non-sparking picks mean that the picks do not generate sparks during downhole use. The spin pick means that the pick can rotate by itself during the process of cutting coal and rock, which ensures that the pick wears evenly and prolongs its life. Abrasion-resistant picks, that is to say, picks have good wear resistance and will not fail quickly.

In addition, according to different geological conditions and rock hardness, picks can also be divided into standard picks, half-rock picks, whole-rock picks, hard-rock picks, etc. The so-called standard pick is the common coal pick. Four-fifths of the underground coal seam is coal, so coal picks are used. If four-fifths are rock, use a full-rock pick. If the hardness of the rock is relatively high, hard rock picks will be selected.
